One of the best things on the coast we did was swim with turtles. We got the heads up from one of the guys where we had been having coffee in the morning about a beach up from Hiriketiya called Turtle point. Wild turtles come in and just hang about, as you do if you’re a turtle I guess.
Luckily for us it’s off peak season so there were only a few others there and it was totally free. Sean had the underwater casing for his phone so he snapped a few short videos. The water is quite cloudy as it was in the shallows and stirred up, but the turtles would happily swim up to you and eat seaweed from your hands.
Such a cool experience to swim with wild turtles instead of captive ones in a marine park.
“Travel makes one modest. You see what a tiny place you occupy in the world.”
Gustavo Flaubert
On the beach at Hiriketiya was an old abandoned building which we were told had been damaged during the 2004 tsunami and never repaired. It was a little eerie to walk through it.
